Some Lives

Strangers

Though we lay together

In the closeness of the night

Just before sleep

Made its claim

She began to speak

Quietly aloud

Rather than to me

She spoke of yearning

For something she’d never found

Her eyes glistened in the darkness

Tear lights

And soft sighs

As she talked of longing

Night after night

Of fitful sleep and dreams

That burn and tear

Fed by false hopes

That this time

The songs would be hers

The dreams shared

But never to be

Some lives, she said softly

Have only the lines

And a hint of the tune

Never the music

Never the song

And she cried

And held me

Forever in the night
