Once I Was; Once I Was

Once I was a toddler
whose chubby little hands
delivered all they could carry
to a mouth never closed.
Once I was a boy
who ran through the fields
and caught all who were not
fast enough to safely flee.
Once I was a student
who devoured words and phrases
in too many books
to count or even believe.
Once I was a soldier
who served in foreign lands
fighting endless battles
in a land far past the war.
Once I was a father
who held joy untold
while my ears were filled
with childish laughter
Once I was a father. . .
Once I was a father. . .
